For a long time we have had the desire to some day put our experience and knowledge into book form. Thus it was most fortunate that in November 1999 we got to know Floros and Sigrid Katsouros, who also collect Lobi artworks with great enthusiasm and dedication. The relatively short distance between our hometowns made it possible for us to meet often to evaluate new acquisi-tions and to compare the styles of similar objects.

In March 2002 we decided that it made no sense for us to publish two separate books on the Lobi wood carvers and that we should pool our knowledge and experience in a joint effort. In this way we could draw on a larger reservoir of art works and have access to more personal knowledge. It was clear from the beginning that we would not be able to present all of the Lobi wood carvers in one book. The volume presented here should be seen as a beginning. Petra & Dr. Stephan Herkenhoff
