The Lobi originally came from Ghana. Around 1770 there was some resettle-ment in Burkina Faso and about 100 years later on the Ivory Coast too. Today, roughly 180.000 Lobi live in
these three countries.

In 1898 the French colonial authorities
for reasons of administrative conven-ience regrouped the Lobi and neigh-bouring tribes like the Birifor, Dagara, Teguéssié (Thuna), Pougouli and Gan into the so-called “Cercle du Lobi”. When we talk about “the art of the Lobi”, it is this community that we are referring to.
